Please Note: Napa Valley College will be closed for fall recess from December 21, 2020 through January 1, 2021.

Napa Valley College is seeking an individual with demonstrated administrative skills to join an outstanding team of faculty, staff, and administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students.

The Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) serves as the District's expert on diversity, equity and inclusivity. The incumbent will work as a key resource to the Superintendent/President and members of the President's cabinet providing support and guidance in district initiatives and goals related to the areas of diversity, equity and inclusivity. The incumbent will work in collaboration with the President, senior leadership, senate leadership, students and various college committees to proactively develop and implement plans and strategies to guide, support and actively engage the Napa Valley College (NVC) community to address climate, behaviors, attitudes and policies that support diversity equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI) of the college.

The Senior Director of DEI will provide leadership and be responsible for creating an institutional framework to aid the College's strategic planning efforts. The incumbent will champion the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive college environment. The incumbent will be responsible for the development and management of initiatives that will support and grow the cultural competence and education of our faculty and staff in support of the NVC students. This position will be responsible for the development and management of a DEI plan for the College.
The position reports to the Superintendent/President.

This is a full-time, temporary, categorically-funded, classified administrative position and is contingent on funding. The salary is at an appropriate placement on Range 18 of the current Administrative/Confidential salary schedule. Initial salary placement is $7,752 to $8,547/month, with future steps up to $10,908/month. Placement on the salary schedule is commensurate with experience. The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and retirement system membership. Assignment includes 19 paid holidays, 22 vacation days, and 12 days sick leave annually.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates with a wide variety of institutional groups (e.g. campus leaders, faculty, staff, students, internal and external constituencies, etc.) for the purpose of setting and implementing priorities and plans to support the college's efforts toward student equity and student engagement

  • Coordinates development and implementation of a variety of projects and related activities (e.g. DEI Plan, strategies to address achievement gaps, submission of reports, progress reports to college leadership, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring implementation of projects and activities, compliance with all regulations and policies, and efficient operation

  • Develops a wide variety of documents and presentation materials, independently and through delegation to other personnel (e.g. plans, proposals, policies, budgets, progress reports, correspondence procedures, forms, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring program management

  • Develops and oversees the organizational infrastructure for diversity, equity, and inclusion (i.e. DEI Office, creation of a DEI plan, etc.) for the purpose of meetings the needs of the campus community

  • Directs the maintenance of services and the implementation of new programs and/or processes (e.g. strategic direction for training initiatives to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values, strategic campus-wide DEI goals, institutional DEI framework, etc.) for the purpose of providing services to the campus community within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements

  • Implements strategic initiatives for the purpose of creating a culture for diversity, equity, and inclusion while ensuring programing supports the college mission and strategic goals

  • Manages budget allocations, expenditures and related financial activities for assigned areas for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and fiscal practices are followed

  • Monitors assigned programs and department activities (e.g. evaluate DEI Plan based on analysis of data, conduct campus climate assessments; establish and maintain internal audit and reporting system; ensure elements are embedded in college mission, vision, and strategic plan; analyze pedagogy, scholarly activities, and classroom climates, reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that performance objectives are met within budget; ensuring compliance with established operational practices; ensuring fair and equitable treatment of students, faculty, and staff; and developing and advancing an equitable, inclusive climate for diversity

  • Participates as a member or facilitator in meetings, workshops and seminars (e.g. local, regional, and statewide meetings; serve as DEI Committee Co-Chair, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required for Napa Valley College

  • Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget

  • Provides leadership and oversight (e.g. day-to-day operations of the department, serving as District's expert on diversity, equity and inclusion, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues, developing processes and recommending action plans to efficiently operate the department

  • Researches, analyzes and compiles data on a wide variety of topics (e.g. legislation and regulations related to DEI, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and established guidelines, securing information for planning, responding to requests, and making recommendations related to the modification of institutional policies, procedures, and norms that contribute to structural barriers to the access and success of students, faculty, and staff who belong to marginalized and oppressed groups

  • Responds to a wide variety of inquiries from internal and external sources for the purpose of identifying relevant issues and recommending or implementing action plans.

  • Supports and advises the Superintendent/President and Cabinet members (e.g. strategic plans, etc.) for the purpose of developing and implementing services and programs to ensure fair and equitable treatment of students, faculty and staff

    Other Functions

    • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

      Minimum Qualifications

      Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

      SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects and programs; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and training, developing and supervising staff; and administering personnel policies and procedures.

      KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations; diversity, equity, and inclusion concepts and issues; personnel processes; standard business practices; and management principles and practices.

      ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working with multiple projects, frequent interruptions, and changing work priorities; working with detailed information/data and maintaining accurate records; maintaining confidentiality; facilitating communication between persons with frequently divergent positions; implementing best practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion; fostering trust and leading through influence; and demonstrating sensitivity to an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.

      Responsibility
      Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing a department; supervising the use of funds. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.

      Work Environment
      The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

      Education:

      • Master's degree in social justice, higher education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management, psychology, ethnic studies or other related field
        All degrees must be from an accredited college or university.

        Experience:

        • Five years of experience building diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in higher education;

        • Two years of management or supervisory experience;

        • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

            • Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses

              Clearances:

              • Criminal Background Clearance

              • Tuberculosis Clearance

                Desirable Qualifications

                • Building DEI programs for community colleges;

                • Two or more years of experience working with underrepresented populations in an educational or community setting.
                  Title 8, USC, Section 1324-A requires verification of eligibility for employment in the United States.
